You should not lower the brightness. Eye strain are symptoms of your eyes trying harder to see the images in front of you. Maybe your computer screen has too much glare. Change its position. Search for an anti-glare protection shield for your monitor.

Search "digital eye strain" on google.

I discovered that smartphone screen is worse for my eye strain than computer screen. Maybe it is because of their different tecnologies (lcd/led).

Finlally, you should go see an eye doctor. It helped me a lot.

Not exactly a mistake, but rather a misuse of the verb “look”; staring at the screen would probably suit the context better. Review the specific  meanings and usage of look, see, glance, glare, stare. As for the eye strain, it’s a true bother; as far as I know there is no solution, but you can minimize the pain by following eye doctor advice.

Do you wear glasses? If so, you could try blue filtered lenses. My doctor recomended it to me and i got it on my latest glasses. Honestly i didnt noticed much difference because i have never really suffered from what you are describing, but it clearly filters blue light, which is the bad one for your eyes.
Search the forum i think there is a post about it. (Filtro azul, blue filter, miolight, filtro uv)
