So, In fact, English is my second language. I´ve been used it since 1992. I´m air traffic controller and, to comunicate with foreign aircrafts, it is the universal language. Not always I know how to make people understand me, but, since 2014, I think it is fair enough.

Great question... At work It has been making difference since 2016 when I started to work with a team from Filipinas. I had already had some knowlodge at that time but when I started to use it daily I really could improve my written skills. I also remember a day when we received an employee from Europe and nobody in the office was able to speak with him and I could help explaining about our safety process in Brazil and about some information.

What I know is that English changed my life and I love it. I still studying and I know I have skills to develop but I won't stop until I be able to write and speak perfectly.

Regards!

When me and my family went to the US. First time traveling to another contry and I'm the only one who can speak english. They were scared. But I coud make the trip joyful for everyone. No holding back from doing anything because I coud manage to work things out.
It was a great feeling!

I backpacked for 3 months a few years ago and I'm pretty sure I had a better experience cause I could speak English. For me, travelling is about making new conections, so being able to comunicate well was a key factor for having a good time.

Hey!

I never been able to travel outside Brazil and never get foreign languages classes, but i work with people in severe social vulnerability. One day we receive a person fleeing the war, hungry and scared, and in this scenario even my macaronic english help him get some food and sleep.

It's very hard to measure it.... for example, to learn new things. Every piece of knowledge in the world has a good version in English, so in this context, considering myself who is not an english native speaker, it's priceless.

I work with spanish native speakers. I do understand them. However, I'm not able to speak Spanish properly. For my position it would be great to speak their language, it would avoid miscommunication and probably I would be perceived as someone more empathic. I'm trying to handle my time to do spanish practice on daily basis.

I think the importance of a second/third/etc language could vary but it always is positive.

Brilliant post! Before I haven't believed this, thought that english was only to people who worked directly with this language. Today I'm studying. I would like to have begun before.

For she the English skill transformed your life and my life too. But we need study more and more.
I want to know if I can indicate a "course" in another topic?

As for English, it has shaped my life. Been speaking it since I was 5, been using it professionally on a daily basis, have raised a now adult bilingual daughter. For years it was the family language. As for German and French, they have been more a source of fun, mix of hobby, passion and brain gym. Dabbled with Italian and Russian for a while, long ago. If I were to single out one experience that made the difference that would be it how it has enhanced literature and music appreciation.

I lived abroad and took my master's degree in English so in practical terms of course it was very important. But I think when people talk about the importance of knowing English they overlook what is to me the most important aspect: most of the knowledge available is in English, especially online. Knowing English works as a springboard to learn countless other things. Those who don't know English are more limited in the learning material available to them in ALL areas. Knowing English also allows you to broaden your perspective by reading foreign media, talking to people of different cultures etc.

Mostly everything. I can't imagine how to live without english. From work to entertainment, culture and knowledge, it is as if you live in another world. Thus, the saying that "If you don't know english, you are not an human being" is so true.

Hello!
For me didn't change but It would.

Two years ago I received a proposition for a good job, and one of the requirements is "Fluently English". I was disapproved.
Now, I'm better and I keep studying English and Spanish. :)

Hi everyone!

I've started studying English by myself since 2014 with support of bbclearningenglis.com and online dictionary oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com. Is amazing see the progress. In May we'll travel for the United States and we put in practice our studies. Read a news, article, etc. in English for me is gratifying. I  think that a should improve the skill of conversation.

I was amazed with a example that is registred in the book Maus.
It's a true story about how a polish jew survived in a concentration camp.

In two crucial moments the fact that he knows how to speak english saved his life. At first a guard keep him alive and give some privilegies to him in change of english classes.

This case gave me a lot to think about how english have to be learned right now.

I am sure that we can miss many opportunities when we do not have a second language. During my international travels, it was very important to speak English in order to enjoy attractions, obtain information, solve problems and understand everything that happens. In my professional career, many good jobs needed a knowledge of English, so I always have to try to improve my language skills.

I've been studying English for a while and speaking it daily for three years, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, it has reshaped my life. Nowadays, relying only on Portuguese for learning and growing is almost unthinkable - plus, I actually enjoy myself in the process of using a foreign language.

As the universal language in a globally connected world, to comunicate in english is imperative today if you want to have a good job or just enjoy visiting others countries. I started to study english in 2001 going in the most common way we see in Brazil, taking classes at a language school. Although the results were not 100%, at least I was able to communicate in English and this brought me great opportunities at my work and personal life too. At work I was the one chosen to represent the company for one month in South Africa during 2010 World Cup and to make a speech in a UN conference in Spain. It only happened because my boss doesn't speak english at all. And regarding personal life, I went with my family to the USA in 2016 and I have no words to describe the feeling of being in a foreing country having the opportunity to fully enjoy the place with no afraid about language issues. As Bastter's philosophy about continued evolution and studies, since last year I started another cycle to improve my english, mainly listening and speaking, because I foresee that it could bring me new opportunities at work.

The day english made a difference in my life was when I first travelled abroad and I realized I could do anything there just like in my country and also when I got that people around the world use this language as a real tool to brigde the gaps between us

Le jour où le français a fait la différence dans ma vie c’était quand j’étais en Pologne et j’ai eu l’aide d’un groupe de français dans un resto! Jusque ce jour là je n’avais encore rencontré d’autre francophones! C’était super intéressant :)

@FlyCavok
