Their consumption is associated with obese individuals and those with metabolic syndrome. But whether processed foods cause obesity and/or metabolic syndromes is not clear. Emerging data and hypotheses suggest that processed foods promote overeating. Hall et al. sought to test this idea in a small cohort of 20 adults with a normal body mass index. They were offered either ultra-processed or unprocessed meals that were largely matched for dietary constituents, such as calories, fat, and sugar. Individuals on the ultraprocessed diet ate about 450 calories more than those on the unprocessed diet, verifying that eating processed foods causes excessive consumption.
