I believe that that's applicable to English (subject + verb + object) because verbs suffer little or no deflection, opposite of what happens in Latin derived languages, in which the deflection of the verb improves the understanding of who the subject is (deflected verb + object). Example:
Comprei pão ontem. -> no subject, but "Comprei" implies 1st person, simple past.

You're right about that...it's one of the few things I realised by myself (I guess so)

That's why it's so important to think "in english" instead of portuguese

While attending to English classes you will learn that subject is always required. Grammatically, it really is.

I have daily connections with native speakers (I report to a north american), and as we do in portuguese, native english speakers frequently ommit the subject in first person.

For instance.
Grammatically: I got it
Spoken: Got it

Grammatically: I didn't know
Spoken: Didn't know.

But you never, ever, may forget to use the object. It really sounds weird for them, not mentioning who or what is suffering the action.

My english is better.

Before: the book is on the table.

Now: the notebook is on the table.

"One thing I have learned" is correct like you said.

But it would also be possible to say:

"One thing I learned" or "One thing I learnt"
But here...you would have to specify the period in time, such as: "One thing I learned when I was younger"

PS: "learnt" as the past tense of TO LEARN is more used outside US/Canada.
