Ethymologically speaking, Goblin came from the much-older mittlegerman word Kobold, which means "house fiend". It inhabits not only houses, but ships and mines, as well. Once in mines, germans used to believe they ate the valuable silver and defecated a venomous ore, that when melted could kill the unwary smith. This fantasy-defecated ore is called nowadays Cobalt, and is quite valuable, actually (but still 10 times cheaper than silver).
