It spoils the suprise, the fun, reveals the plot twists
Also:
Too much salt spoiled the soup
The granny spoiled her grandkids by doing whatever they wanted
As an adjective: those are spoiled kids

"The only thing that could spoil a day was people".

In this sentence, why did the author write "was" instead of "were" as "people" is a plural word?

I ask this because, according to the logic above, it seems a little strange that if we would turn the sentence into passive voice we would have to write: "People was the only thing that could spoil a day."

The subject in that sentence is "thing", which is singular. As the verb agrees with the subject in number, we must use "was" instead of "were".

Sentences in passive voice usually have a different subject than those in active voice. So the verb must also change accordingly, to agree in number with this new subject. That's often the case even in portuguese. For instance:

Eu eliminei os obstáculos. -> eliminei is singular, to agree with Eu
Os obstáculos foram eliminados por mim. -> foram eliminados is plural, to agree with Os obstáculos
