When my wife and I married we lived in a tiny apartment in a rough part of town because, well, it was cheap and we had no money. We were young and thought we could live on love alone. And almost proved it a couple of times.
And we were happy.
A few years in our kids came along. I was involved in a family business and had some good years. Then the business relationships imploded and I was forced out with a struggling branch operation and some cash.
I learned to invest fast is what saved us financially when the business I owned went bankrupt.
We still had fun as a family. Playing in the evening, mini vacations and weekend outings.
And we were happy.
I then pastored a church. Yeah, I know, quite a switch. It’s a long story. And while it was rich in personal rewards it was scant in financial ones. The church grew exponentially with lots of excitement. It was exhausting and exhilarating.
Ten years in some leaders grew weary with the messiness of growing and wanted a change. So I resigned.
Yet, we had fun as a family. I HCAOCed kids soccer, attended kids performances, enjoyed family vacations and spent joyful times with close friends.
And we were happy.
Then I started my current business. It was rough ramping up. A few times I wondered if we’d make it, yet, had no alternative. Long stressful days wore me down and consistent growth encouraged me.
Yet, we felt blessed watching our kids grow into wonderful adults. We enjoyed dinners with friends, longer vacations and pursuing hobbies.
And we were happy.
Today, my business is successful and far less stressful. We’ve built comfortable wealth that we could easily retire on but have I have no desire to do. We enjoy hours with our family and friends and pursuing activities we enjoy.
And we are happy.Yet, frankly, not any happier. Because, thankfully,
we learned to be happy in the journey not just the destination.
You’ll only be happy with wealth if you, first, learn to be happy in the journey to build it.
