"To cope with the difficulty of investing in each of these market environments I keep things extremely simple — I just keep buying either way.

Investing periodically over time completely takes the idea of market timing and the inherent stress that comes with it, off the table. I don’t spend my time looking for the fat pitch or shoeshine boy sign of a top. I’m not trying to outsmart the market while simultaneously outsmarting myself."

Perfeito @O.Escolhido penso exatamente igual.

@Barbas Sua opinião não importa, Barbas

Essa frase é excelente:

"The beauty of dollar cost averaging is you diversify across time and market environments so you don’t need to worry about the timing of your purchases as much."

"Legendary mutual fund manager Peter Lynch performed a study with Fidelity Investments that looked at the 30-year period from 1965 to 1995 and found that if you invested every single year at the lows in the market (the lowest day to be precise) you would have earned a return of 11.7 percent annually.

Had you been the unlucky sort, and picked the high day every single year to put your money to work, your return would have been 10.6 percent. On the other hand if you would have kept it simple and put your money to work on the first day of the year and not tried to guess one way or the other, you would have earned 11.0 percent per year.

The odds of consistently picking the best and worst days are minimal, but putting money into the markets on a periodic basis is something every investor can do. So much time and energy is put into trying to figure out the best time to invest when a simple dollar cost averaging (DCA) plan with a long time horizon is much less stressful and easier to implement."

When Dollar Cost Averaging Matters the Most

@thlsn

Day Trading for a Living? by Fernando Chague, Rodrigo De-Losso, Bruno Giovannetti :: SSRN

A study of Brazilian futures traders found 97% of individuals who traded in the market for more than 300 days lost money on their trades.

Abstract:
We show that it is virtually impossible for individuals to day trade for a living, contrary to what course providers claim. We observe all individuals who began to day trade between 2013 and 2015 in the Brazilian equity futures market, the third in terms of volume in the world. We find that 97% of all individuals who persisted for more than 300 days lost money. Only 1.1% earned more than the Brazilian minimum wage and only 0.5% earned more than the initial salary of a bank teller — all with great risk.

Trading is Hazardous to Your Wealth: The Common Stock Investment Performance of Individual Investors by Brad M. Barber, Terrance Odean :: SSRN

The investment experience of individual investors is remarkably similar
to the investment experience of mutual funds. As do individual investors,
the average mutual fund underperforms a simple market index ~Jensen ~1969!
and Malkiel ~1995!!.

Mutual funds trade often and their trading hurts performance ~Carhart ~1997!!. But trading by individual investors is even more deleterious to performance because individuals execute small trades and face
higher proportional commission costs than mutual funds.

Our main point is simple: Trading is hazardous to your wealth. Why then do investors trade so often? The aggregate turnover of the individual investor portfolios we analyze is about 70 percent; the average turnover is about 75 percent. The New York Stock Exchange reports that the annual turnover
of stocks listed on the exchange hovered around 50 percent during our sample period. Mutual funds average an annual turnover of 77 percent ~Carhart ~1997!!.

We believe that these high levels of trading can be at least partly explained by a simple behavioral bias: People are overconfident, and overconfidence leads to too much trading.

Behavioral finance models that incorporate investor overconfidence ~e.g.,Odean ~1998b!! provide an even stronger prediction: Active investment strategies will underperform passive investment strategies.

Overconfident investors will overestimate the value of their private information, causing them to trade too actively and, consequently, to earn below-average returns. Consistent with these behavioral models of investor overconfidence, we provide empirical evidence that households, which hold about half of U.S. equities, trade too much, on average. Those who trade the most are hurt the most.
